WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Large amount of snow determined prolonged melting, flooding of tundra with melted water, and generally delayed spring. Snowcover exceed 80% till 25 June. Ice-break on Pyasina occurred on 7 July which is 7-10 days later than normally. Later summer was relatively dry and warm, without pronounced temperature falls. Storms did not occur till 6 August which is unusial for the area.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes did not breed for the first time in 5 seasons, although 1-2 animals stayed in the region by mid July. Snowy Owl, buzzards and skuas did not nest, less than half of the 1994 Herring Gulls number nested. Majority of birds started breeding a week later than usially, wader density was somewhat lower. Dominated Little Stints, but relatively abundant were also Grey Plovers, Pacific Golden Plovers, and Curlew Sandpipers, successfully nested Dotterels and Pectoral Sandpipers. Nest success was less than 50%. Weather was favourable for nesting and brood-raring.

Rodent dynamics:

Collared Lemmings decreased more than four times compared to similar period of 1994 (0.4 specimens per 100 trap-days), and did not become more abundant even during spring flooding. Siberian Lemmings was only visually recorded. Decrease in lemming numbers resulted from unfavourable fall-winter 1994-95 when snowless frosts and thaws interspersed.
